Visa Pathways & Eligibility
Q: What are the main differences between Business Investor Visa and Active Investor Plus categories?
Business Investor Visa requires NZD 1-2M investment in an existing business with active management involvement. Active Investor Plus requires NZD 5-10M in compliant investments (managed funds, direct investments, bonds, property developments). Active Investor Plus offers more flexible physical presence requirements with portfolio based investments rather than hands on business operation.
Processing times vary by category and completeness of application. Active Investor Plus applications are typically processed within 6-12 months from submission to Approval in Principle. The Business Investor Visa programme has launched in November 2025, but Immigration New Zealand has not yet published official processing timeframes for this visa category. We help minimise delays through thorough preparation.
Yes, investor visas include spouse/partner and dependent children under 24. We provide comprehensive family inclusion planning to ensure all members meet requirements.
Active Investor Plus Growth requires a minimum of 21 days in New Zealand over the entire 3 year investment period. Active Investor Plus Balanced requires a minimum of 105 days over the entire 5 year investment period. For each additional NZD $1 million invested in Growth category investments (Balanced category only), you can reduce the time required by 14 days, up to a maximum reduction of 42 days. Business Investor Visa holders are required to be actively present in New Zealand to run their business, and while the work visa stage does not state a fixed day count, genuine on the ground management is expected. To qualify for the Business Investor Resident Visa, you must have spent at least 184 days in New Zealand in each qualifying year while actively operating the business.
Investment Requirements
For Active Investor Plus Growth category: managed funds approved by Invest New Zealand and direct investments in New Zealand businesses. For Active Investor Plus Balanced category: a broader range including listed shares, bonds, managed funds, direct business investments, new commercial and residential property developments. The Business Investor Visa requires investment into an existing New Zealand business that has been operating for at least five years and employs a minimum of five full time staff. We provide pre screened investment opportunities that meet Immigration New Zealand requirements.
Yes, but it depends on the visa pathway. Investment in an existing business may be acceptable under the Business Investor Visa, while the Active Investor Plus Visa generally requires qualifying capital investment into approved asset classes and does not usually accept the purchase of an existing business unless it meets Immigration New Zealand’s acceptable investment criteria.
Immigration New Zealand requires comprehensive documentation showing legal source of funds. We assist with preparing acceptable evidence including bank statements, business sale records, and professional certifications.
Investment requirements continue throughout the visa term (3 years for Growth, 5 years for Balanced). Early withdrawal may affect visa status. We provide ongoing compliance monitoring and exit planning when appropriate.
